The Vauxhall Insignia is styled to look more like a coupe than a family car, but it can’t match the Ford Mondeo for driving fun
The Vauxhall Insignia has always been a popular choice with fleet managers and company car drivers. With this latest facelift there are even more reasons why you can buy this model with your heart and your head.
Not everyone who buys an Insignia is a salesman, but if you need to lug around samples, leaflets and sales tools, then the size of the boot should be fine. There is plenty of room and there’s a large opening and the split rear seats fold. Tall teenagers will not moan about the amount of space in the rear, with lots of legroom and headroom.
There is an abundance of storage slots and door bins. Changes over the old model include a more stylish centre console and better quality dashboard. The optional 8 inch TFT instrument cluster and interlink system, which allows you to control the car’s functions using a clever little touch pad. All cars come with 16 inch alloy wheels, DAB radio, Bluetooth and cruise control, while top specs get leather seats, sat nav and larger alloy wheels.
Running costs have improved as the new 2.0-litre diesel comes in two guises; 118bhp or 138bhp and both promise class leading figures of over 75 mpg. This results in low company car costs and rock bottom fuel costs. Amazingly, the theoretical range is 1,100 miles – the distance from London to Budapest on a single tank of diesel.
The redesigned suspension provides a comfortable and stable ride, however the Insignia is susceptible to the wheel size choice. The larger 18-inch wheels on the top-spec models provide most control without compromising ride comfort.
The manual gearbox is good, making the Insignia feel responsive, however it’s not quite as good fun to drive as a Mazda 6 and although the steering is precise, the varying weight feels artificial as you increase speed. The engine is good on the move, but still ‘tappety’ around town.
All in all, it’s cheaper to buy, run and insure than ever, and for those reasons it’s very popular.
